One of the most common wishes among patients is to have a brighter and whiter smile.
However, this desire is often accompanied by questions, doubts, and some concerns.
We have collected the 3 most frequently asked questions we receive in our practice about teeth whitening.
Does teeth whitening damage the teeth?
Teeth whitening does not damage the enamel, provided it is performed professionally by a dentist.
Professional products use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide in safe concentrations, which act only on stain pigments without affecting the tooth structure.
However, DIY or overly frequent treatments may cause sensitivity or abrasion, which is why it is essential to always rely on a dental professional.
How long does the whitening effect last?
The duration varies from 6 months to 2 years, and it largely depends on lifestyle habits.
Some of the factors that influence longevity include:
- Coffee, tea, and red wine consumption
- Smoking
- Daily oral hygiene
- Use of dietary supplements
Maintaining the results for longer is possible with periodic touch-up applications, always under the dentist’s supervision.
Is teeth whitening painful? Does it cause sensitivity?
Teeth whitening is not painful, but it may cause temporary sensitivity to hot or cold, especially within the first 24–48 hours.
This effect is more common in patients who already have sensitive teeth.
In our practice, we use desensitizing products before or after the treatment to minimize discomfort.
In any case, any sensitivity is reversible and usually disappears within a few days.
We also provide patients with specific products included in a “whitening kit” to support them after treatment.
